![]() Fraud On 21 October 2002, a serious fire broke out at premises located on Blackpool 's Golden Mile. The fire was severe, almost resulting in the death of the occupant of a flat and causing £5 million worth of damage. Following instructions from interested Insurers a meeting was held on the day following the fire with one of the Insured, who occupied part of the premises. Detailed investigations were undertaken including liaising with the Police. Enquiries subsequently revealed significant non-disclosure of numerous previous fires and the existence of a feud between the Insured and the owners of the premises. The results of enquiries by the Police and forensic investigators pointed the finger of blame at the Insured. This ultimately resulted in their arrest and charge with arson. Richard Hartley Partnership's loss adjuster gave evidence in the subsequent trial, which resulted in a conviction and jail sentences of between 5 and 9 years. Needless to say, no payment was made by Insurers. |
