Failure of Condenser Tubes

We were dealing with a claim on behalf of Insurers at a nuclear power plant. The claim involved the property damage and associated business interruption in connection with the loss of blades and collateral damage to other fixed and rotating blades, along with over a hundred condenser tubes.

A spare rotor was installed and the condenser tubes repaired. On return to service, however, the unit tripped and damage was found to additional condenser tubes.

Initially it was thought that this damage and the associated BI implications were connected to the original incident, but after we undertook a detailed inspection within the condenser unit itself, we were able to establish both to our and the Insured's satisfaction, that the second incident was totally unrelated.

This meant that the first claim was satisfactorily adjusted, whilst the second claim was withdrawn as it fell within the policy deductible.
