Fire to biomass stocks

One winter night, arsonists set alight a significant volume of biomass stocks (straw) held offsite at two separate locations from a power plant.

We were instructed by Insurers and initially undertook a photographic survey of the site and interviewed staff to build up a picture of the quantities destroyed.  We undertook a full stock reconciliation, which mirrored the initial assessments.

A valuation exercise followed and the property damage loss was agreed within a very short period.  The business interruption loss was more problematic, as a lack of availability of replacement straw fuel stocks until the following summer’s harvest resulted in reductions in generation in the weeks prior to the harvest.  Indeed the wet weather had delayed the harvest and thereby exacerbated the business interruption loss.
